The monastery is located at the southern tip of the Elephantine Island.  It was built to honor Anba Hadra, a fourth century monk.  That is why the monastery is also known as Anba Hatre.  Around the first half of the eleventh or even on the tenth century, the main church of the monastery was built.   It is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Egypt.
