Chefren Pyramid

Second Largest Pyramid in Egypt

The Chefren Pyramid also widely known as the Pyramid of Khafre or Khephren is the second largest pyramid in the Giza Plateau in Cairo. It is the final resting place of a fourth dynasty pharaoh Khafre.

Built next to the largest pyramid which is that of Khufu, it is also often referred to as the second pyramid. Chefren is the son and heir of the Pharaoh Khufu, his pyramid was more modestly designed than that of his father’s following a steeper inclination and a narrower baseline.

123EgyptTours.com offers daily tours to the Giza Necropolis Complex where you will not only enjoy the Chefren Pyramid but as well as the two other pyramids in the complex and many other structures like the Valley Temple and the Great Sphinx.

History and Life Story

The son and successor of the Pharaoh Khufu and his wife Hensuten, followed his father’s smooth sided pyramid design but rather chose a more modest one. It is shorter, narrower and built on a steeper slope, however even with this plans, the Pyramid was built in a slightly elevated part of the plateau, making it appear slightly taller than Khufu’s coming from most angles.

Chefren was an Egyptian pharaoh of the Fourth dynasty, who had his capital at Memphis. Most historians also credit Chefren as the pharaoh who built the Great Sphinx as well as the Valley Temple very near his pyramids.

To this day there is no found evidence that anyone was buried inside the main burial chamber of the Chefren Pyramid. It is likely that the Pyramid of Chefren was looted during the First Intermediate Period. It is known however that it was at one point during Rameses II reign; the pyramid was robbed of casing stones to build a temple in Heliopolis.
