Importance and History of the Church
The Church of Abu Serga is believed to have been built in the area where the Holy Family that of Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus, stayed at the end of their journey in Egypt. For sometime they stayed here as the father Joseph, worked at the fortress.
Because of this fact the Church of Abu Serga is an extremely important church for the Christian Coptic Orthodox Church. It is where many of its high ranking officials and even patriarchs were elected.
Built in the 4th century AD, the church was dedicated to the two soldier saints who were martyred around the same time in Syria by the Roman Emperor Maximian. Like the other ancient churches, it has also seen a lot of history; it has been flooded, raided, and even burned. And for the many faithful it has been repaired, renovated and rebuilt for many times.
The most interesting feature of the Church of the Abu Serga is the small crypt that is believed to be where Mary, Joseph and their infant child Jesus rested. Today the crypt can still be seen it is 10 meter deep although if the Nile River water level is high it is most of the time also flooded.
The Church of Saint Barbara is considered to be one of the earliest models of the Christian Coptic architecture. Much part of the style and architecture here is just like the Hanging Church, also in Cairo.
Though you will still be able to enjoy some of the ancient architecture, some of the ancient relics like the pulpit are now replaced with newer copies of the original ones. The original artifacts are now being housed in the Coptic Museum.
Surely your visit to the amazing city of Cairo will be incomplete without visiting this important place. Not only that the general area of the location of the Church of Abu Serga is home to many other interesting structures and buildings that you will also enjoy.
