Building the Dendara Temple

Like the cliché goes, you will easily fall in love with the Dendara Temple. Boasting as one of the best preserved temples in Egypt, you will easily understand the attention and the details that its builders placed into action in building this house of worship of the goddess Hathor.

The little town of Dendara is home to many chapels and shrines during the ancient times. As the ancient town of Nikentori, a former capital of the 6th Nome of Upper Egypt, it is no wonder that many regard this as an important city. Today one of the best reasons why thousands of tourist flock to Dendara yearly is to witness the majestic temple of Hathor that is the town’s centerpiece.

The whole Dendara Temple Complex covers about 40,000 sq meters of land fortified by a brick wall. Like many other temple complexes in Egypt the Dendara Temple Complex is no work of only one pharaoh but instead is a collaboration of many succeeding ones each one making an imprint. It is known today that the earliest temples were built by the pharaoh Nectanebo II, there are also structures known to have been built by the pharaoh Pepi I.

The Hathor Temple, also considered to be the main temple underwent many renovations as time is passed from one pharaoh to another. This temple rests on the foundations of one of the earliest architecture during the reign of Khufu and Cheops.

For most parts of the temple it is dedicated to the goddess of fertility and sky Hathor, represented by an image of a crocodile.
