The History of the Egyptian Museum

Housing many relics of the ancient civilization in Egypt, the Egyptian Museum holds the most number of Pharaonic artifacts. Included here are the famous collection of Royal Mummies and the treasures of the child king Tutankhamen.

It was first established in 1835 near the Ezbekeyah Garden by the Egyptian Government. Later on it was moved to Boulaq in 1858 since the first building has no more enough space to hold the newly discovered antiquities. Duke Maximillian of Austria hired a French architect to design and develop a new museum in Boulaq for all the antiquities. However with the constant flooding of the Nile River, this was the main reason then that the antiquities were again transferred to another museum which is in Giza. The artifacts and the museum stayed there for a time until it was moved again to its current location today in Tahrir Square.

The Museum Today

Nowadays there are future plans to move the museum to a nearby location in El Giza, Egypt. The planned location will make the museum very accessible to the other attractions in the area including the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx.

It is a well known place as most of the building is well paved making it accessible even for handicapped and wheelchair bound travelers. Included in some of the display in the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities are the Royal Mummies, which are actually former pharaohs of Egypt. One of the pharaohs here is Ramses III, Amenhotep IV, also in found here is the mummy of king Sneferu the builder of the famous Bent and Red Pyramids.

One of the most visited exhibits here are the collection of the Child King Tutankhamen, which when discovered found his tomb almost intact.
